Food In New Zealand is very Western however the main centres have a wide variety available.
Water
Drinking water is generally safe, in fact many parts of NZ boast some of the most pure water in the world but it is best to check with the local authorities when travelling off the beaten track.
Tipping
Tipping is not customary or expected in New Zealand.
Security
NZ is a relatively safe country to visit, but commom sense still applies. Use a lock on your suitcase and don't leave your belongings unattended where possible.
Shopping
ATM machines are easy to find throughout New Zealand, and EFTPOS is available in nearly all shops.
Country Codes
The country code for New Zealand is +64 or 0064. If a phone number is listed as 03 XXX XXXX and you are dialing from outside New Zealand you will need to add on the +64 and drop the first 0. For example 03 123 1234 becomes +64 3 123 1234 or 0064 3 123 1234. Cell phone numbers usually start with 021, 025, 027 or 029, and 0800 numbers are toll free.
Currency Exchanges
Currency exchanges can be found in all city centres.
Trading Hours
Normal trading hours are Mon-Sat, 9am - 5pm, though Main shopping centres (or malls) are usually open later on Thursdays (generally 9pm), and on Sundays.
Public Holidays
New Zealand celebrates 11 public holidays on which many shops will not open. Food outlets may increase their charges by 15% on these days. In addition to the ones listed below there is one Anniversary day per region throughout New Zealand.
